Scenes from a Marriage

Part 5 + 6 of the episode film originally made for television about the decay of an ‘ideal’ marriage, disappointment and loneliness. After ten years, lecturer Johan (Erland Josephson) and lawyer Marianne (Liv Ullmann)’s marriage is in crisis. This film inspired Ivo van Hove to create a play of the same title: see the exhibition All About Theatre About Film.

poster Scenes from a Marriage (Scener ur ett aktenskap) (Ingmar Bergman, SE 1973 - 1974)

Scenes from a Marriage shows how western people are in danger of losing their identity in the civilised world”, according to Van Hove. “Marianne and Johan think they are the ideal couple, but can’t see that their marriage is built on quicksand. What follows is a theatrical investigation of the real nature of love and living together.”
