Small Axe - Lovers Rock
Steve McQueen / GB, 2020 / 70 min.
Two young people fall in love at a house party in West London in 1980. The film is an ode to the romantic reggae genre Lovers Rock and the independence and resourcefulness of London’s West-Indian community.

Unlike the other episodes of Small Axe, Lovers Rock is a fictional story. These kind of parties were based on fact, though. As people of colour were barred from clubs, they organised house parties with self-built sound systems, with the neighbourhood getting together to dance and celebrate black culture.
Small Axe is a series of five feature films by British artist and filmmaker Steve McQueen (1969). The films are set between the 1960s and the 1980s and tell the personal stories of members from London’s West-Indian community, who constantly struggle against racism and discrimination.
