In 2021, Amsterdam Art Week will take place from 17 to 27 June, an extension to a full week. During Art Week, the participating galleries present new exhibitions and show special collaborations with internationally emerging artists. Eye presents a number of special screenings, among which the full series Small Axe by British filmmaker and artist Steve McQueen.
Eye is screening Small Axe as part of Amsterdam Art Week. Small Axe is a collection of five films by the British artist and director Steve McQueen (1969). The films are set in the period from the late 1960s to the 1980s and tell the personal stories of members of the West Indian community in London, who faced rampant racism and discrimination in their daily lives.
Small Axe: Mangrove tells the true story of a group of black British activists, the Mangrove Nine. Small Axe: Lovers Rock is an ode to the romantic reggae genre, Lovers Rock, and to the self-reliance and resourcefulness of the West Indian community in London. Small Axe: Red, White and Blue tells the true story of Leroy Logan, a forensic scientist with a yearning to make a difference with the London Metropolitan Police.

In Small Axe: Alex Wheatle, young Alex Wheatle feels part of a community for the first time when he moves to Brixton in London. In Small Axe: Education we learn about the unofficial segregation policy that prevents many black children from having the education they deserve.
