Paul Auster (1947-2024 was a massive film buff and author who was inspired by cinematic techniques. Smoke is set in a tobacconist’s in Brooklyn that was based on the shop chain smoker Auster himself frequented numerous times a week. His encounters there laid the foundations for the film he made with Wayne Wang. The tobacconist’s owner Auggie (Harvey Keitel) has a frequent visitor in the shape of an author with writer's block, not coincidentally named Paul (Wiliam Hurt).
