Smoke
Wayne Wang / DE, JP, US, 1995 / 112 min.
The New York tobacconists owned by Auggie (Harvey Keitel) is a place of unexpected meetings in this melancholy slice of life based on a script by Paul Auster, the author who died on 30 April 2024.

Paul Auster (1947-2024 was a massive film buff and author who was inspired by cinematic techniques. Smoke is set in a tobacconist’s in Brooklyn that was based on the shop chain smoker Auster himself frequented numerous times a week. His encounters there laid the foundations for the film he made with Wayne Wang. The tobacconist’s owner Auggie (Harvey Keitel) has a frequent visitor in the shape of an author with writer's block, not coincidentally named Paul (Wiliam Hurt).
