New York sweats through a permanent heatwave, clean water, soap, vegetables, meat and fruit have become unaffordable except for the super rich in their ritzy apartments. Other New Yorkers are homeless and hungry, subsisting on the strange, factory-produced rusk: Soylent Green.
How vegetarian is this government provided rusk? Detective Thorn (Charlton Heston) attempts to find out supported by aging scientist Sol Roth (Edward G. Robinson’s last role) and discover the shocking truth …
Soylent Green is a shining example of a societally critical cult film and was screened at countless SF festivals. Fleischer provides an ominous depiction of the now not so distant over-populated future and Big Corp’s machinations. Little civilisation remains when the populace is reduced to fighting for the last scraps of food.

The year is 2031. A new Ice Age grips the planet, and the human race faces extinction. Only those who could get onto the heated express train Snowpiercer have a chance of survival. But tensions run high on board the train, which has been running for seventeen years: the front carriages are home to a wealthy elite, while at the back is a ghetto for the poor. Violent insurrection seems inevitable.

Film directors have used fiction to show how humanity relates to nature, in every genre. Think, for instance, of disaster films, ones about pandemics, underwater creatures that can talk or plant-based life forms who colonise the minds and bodies of earth’s inhabitants.

An astonishing debut, written, produced, directed and edited by the 25-year-old British filmmaker Scott Barley, who shot his film on an iPhone. Slow cinema at its very best.

The end of days is nigh. Mankind is long extinct. The waterfall dries up. The first lightening slowly builds. A storm starts. Everything goes black. Until the light returns from the darkness. Have we entered the afterlife?
Nature is terrifying and awe-inspiring; so powerful it makes humans insignificant. Sleep Has Her House is an exceptional landscape film in which tiny movements and subtle changes make a huge impression. Sometimes the film is so calm and quiet that screen looks like a painting projected onto the screen. Then something begins to flow, a gust of wind blows through the trees to dazzling effect.
Installation artist Scott Barley, a promising filmmaker from Wales, made a determinedly ethical film that evokes the 'terrible sublime’. He documented two days in a woodland, starting with an abstract close-up of a waterfall. As dawn breaks, the camera floats somewhere above the clouds. The film’s longest take is 11 minutes in length and records a slowly setting sun. A prime example of slow cinema.

Sleep Has Her House

Eco-science fiction films are about the relationship between humans and nature. How has that narrative evolved over the past 50 years? And is it a single narrative or are there many? We will immerse ourselves in the cinematic history of humanity’s future on earth and whether there is still room for hope or are we doomed to imagine the end of the world?

Sociologist Ruben Jacobs discusses his new book De eeuw van Felix in which he ponders what it will be like for his son Felix to grow up in an era defined by attempting to keep the planet inhabitable, both for him and the generations that follow. He wonders how do you maintain hope, perhaps even against all odds? He will focus, among other things, on the desolate, abandoned former industrial city of Detroit where the population has collectively embraced urban farming. Ruben Jacobs will interview media scientist Dan Hassler-Forest about eco-science fiction films such as Jurassic Park, Avatar and Annihilation in which gardening humans have lost control. He will also speak in depth to artist Müge Yilmaz whose work has been selected for the Venice Biennale 2022. She will reveal how her work was inspired by that of land-art maker Agnes Denes.
