Strange Way of Life
Pedro Almodóvar / ES, FR, 2023 / 31 min.
Pedro Almodóvar’s 31-minute answer to Brokeback Mountain, featuring Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal as the cowboy Silva and sheriff Jake, onetime lovers in a mini-western for the 21st century, shot in Almería, where Sergio Leone’s spaghetti westerns were made in the 1960s.
It’s weird really that Pedro Almodóvar politely declined to direct Brokeback Mountain (2005), the love story between two cowboys, when it was offered to him; Ang Lee took over and the rest is history.
Almodovár did remember though part of the dialogue lines from Ang Lee’s Oscar-winning film. “What would two men do working on a ranch in the Wild West?’ cowboy Heath says to Jack after meeting each other for the first time in 25 years. The phrase turned out to be the starting point for Almodóvar’s version of Brokeback Mountain.
Pre-screening
Screening with two Dutch shorts in a 45'-program for a reduced entrance fee: Henk Loorbach's Kodog (NL 2020, 1') and Pablo (FR 2017, 10') by Julien Carpentier about French teenager Pablo, who leads a double life: in the evenings he is a rapper and during the day he can regularly be found at the riding school as a horse rider.
