Stroszek
Werner Herzog / DE, 1977 / 108 min.
Herzog gave the lead role in Stroszek to Bruno S., a busker and former prisoner, following on from Kaspar Hauser – Jeder für sich und Gott gegen alle. Unlike the director’s other muse, the theatrical Klaus Kinski, Bruno S. excels in attractive under-acting.
“No more alcohol!” the prison governor growls at newly released busker Bruno. Moments later, Bruno is enjoying a beer in his favourite bar in Berlin, while intervening on behalf of Eva, who has just been beaten by two violent pimps. When Bruno's landlord Scheitz announces he is going to visit his cousin in America, the pair of outcasts decide to go with him. In search of the American dream; which has spectacularly failed to take root in the barren, dusty soil of rural Wisconsin.
