Taste the Whip: Animals in Moving Image
Janis Rafa in conversation with Maarten Reesink
Artist and filmmaker Janis Rafa in conversation with Maarten Reesink (University of Amsterdam). How does Rafa's work touch on issues like animal rights, activism, ethics and media? Featuring film excerpts and an expansive Q&A.

Tonight is an exceptional collaboration between Eye and the University of Amsterdam's Institute for Interdisciplinary Studies as part of the course Food, Animals and the Environment.
Eye has dedicated an exhibition to the work of Janis Rafa. Tonight, she talks to Maarten Reesink, who works at the Department of Media and Culture as well as the Institute for Interdisciplinary Studies at the University of Amsterdam, where he has lectured on animal-human studies since 2008. He is the co-founder of the Centrum voor DierMens Studies (diermensstudies.nl), the author of Dier en Mens: Onze band met andere dieren (Boom, 2021) and the co-author of Dierzaamheid: Duurzaam samenleven met dieren (Noordboek, 2022).
During the program, Rafa's video works Requiem to a Fatal Incident (2015) and If I Ever Get A Monument Chickens Will Do It For Me [Requiem 3] (2020) will be screened, as well as an excerpt from her film Kala azar (2020). The conversation will cover topics such as the depiction of animals in the media; the role of the camera within animal rights activism; and recognizing marginalized animal life in urban areas. Marian Cousijn, co-curator of the exhibition, moderates the conversation.
