The 20th Century
Matthew Rankin / CA, 2019 / 90 min.
Even before Universal Language (Previously Unreleased 2025) Matthew Rankin enjoyed wrongfooting viewers. The 20th Century is both a meta commentary on the historical biopic and an ironic melodrama in a German expressionist style, all of which in Technicolor.

Toronto, 1899. The ambitious young politician Mackenzie King dreams of being Canada’s prime minister. His struggle for power pits him against his tyrannical mother, a war mongering governor general and the utopian idealism of a mystic from Québec.
