The Boy and the Heron
Hayao Miyazaki / JP, 2023 / 124 min.
A decade after the anime classic The Wind Rises, another Hayao Miyazaki (Studio Ghibli) film after all. This autobiographically influenced narrative – equally beautiful as it is gruesome – about a teenager in Tokyo, his father and a mysterious heron is set against the background of World War Two.

The young Mahito flees to the countryside with his father during an allied offensive, after his mother died during a fire at the hospital. When his father remarries, he has trouble accepting his stepmother. A meeting with a mysterious heron takes him to a fantasy world where he gradually learns to process the loss of his mother.
