Tilda Swinton – curator of the exhibition Tilda Swinton – Ongoing at Eye, stars in obscure art films, celebrated arthouse productions and blockbusters all with equal ease. The three-part Chonicles of Narnia adaptation of C.S. Lewis’ series of books about the magical land of Narnia ruled by the White Witch Jadis is one of the latter.

Pre-film

Prior to The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, you will see an edit of footage Tim Walker shot on his phone during his photo shoot with Tilda Swinton in Iceland. Tilda Swinton hand-picked a short film, either from her rich oeuvre or from Eye’s collection, to precede all feature films.

Why in Eye

One night, years after we made this film, while shooting with Erick Zonca in Mexico City, when a crowd of street children, who had - somehow - been enchanted by Narnia, possibly through the windows of tv shops, gathered round me wanting to be close to The White Witch, Sandro waved an arm in their direction and murmured ‘future Derek Jarman fans’. Through the back of the wardrobe had always been a wise destination. Derek once sat on a subway in New York next to Margaret Hamilton, the impressively nose-d Wicked Witch of the West from The Wizard of Oz and was struck to his childhood heart. When given the chance, I had to play a great iconic witch for him: he would have LOVED it so.
