The Chronology of Water

Kristen Stewart / US, 2025 / 128 min.

Thanks to literature, talented swimmer Lidia (Imogen Poots) is able to escape a youth marred by violence. Kristen Stewart’s intense directorial debut follows her subsequent descent into self-destruction – through sex, drink, drugs and rage – and shows how trauma can be transformed into art.

Lidia (a superb performance from Imogen Poots) only feels whole when she’s in the water. By swimming length after length, she’s able to temporarily escape her volatile father, who sexually abuses her and her sister Claudia. Outside of the pool, however, Lidia struggles. She loses herself in drink, drugs and reckless sex, and snarls dismissively at everyone around her.
