The Dragon Painter
William Worthington / US, 1919 / 62 min.
A rare example of a silent Hollywood film with an almost entirely Asian cast. A fairytale-style drama about a mad genius Japanese painter in search of a princess who is said to have turned into a dragon. Newly restored version featuring footage discovered in the Eye collection.

Half madman, half genius Tatsu searches the Japanese wilderness for a dragon princess who’s hiding in the mountains. To feed his obsession, he creates beautiful paintings of her. Tatsu is lured to the city by an official who deceives him into thinking he will finally meet the dragon princess. In reality she is Ume-Ko, daughter of master artist Kano.
Live piano accompaniment by Daan van den Hurk and with an English spoken introduction by Elif Rongen, Curator of Silent Film in Eye.
