Satyajit Ray’s second film – the follow-up to The Golden Fortress – about the madcap adventures of detective Feluda (Soumitra Chatterjee) was inspired by Sherlock Holmes and his teenage cousin Tapesh. On holiday in the picturesque holy city of Benares (current day Varanasi) our sly detective is approached by a rich family to retrieve a family heirloom of inestimable value, a golden statue of Ganesh, the elephant god. When a murder occurs, Feluda's radar picks up other suspects.
