The Graduate
Mike Nichols / US, 1967 / 106 min.
A big hit in 1967 thanks to its dry humour, candid approach to sex and satirical depiction of America's upper middle class. Featuring a brilliantly comic Anne Bancroft and the first leading role for Dustin Hoffman. 4K restored version.

Recently graduated Benjamin Braddock (Dustin Hoffman) and the alcoholic Mrs. Robinson (Anne Bancroft) drift aimlessly in upper middle-class circles, which are all about appearances, cocktail parties and new cars; a life where ennui forms the leitmotif. Within this world, Benjamin allows the mysterious Mrs. Robinson – the wife of one of his father’s best friends – to seduce him. Their clandestine escapades are complicated however when Benjamin falls for Mrs. Robinson’s daughter, Elaine. This results in a tragicomic game of cat-and-mouse, charged with confusion, desire and rebellion, all set against the backdrop of America in the sixties.
Restored in 4K by The Criterion Collection from the 35mm original negative. The color correction was supervised by Grover Crisp at Sony Pictures and approved by the director Mike Nichols. The 5.1 audio mix, approved by the director, was made at Chace Audio from a 35mm magnetic soundtrack and the original soundtrack.
