The Lady from Shanghai
Orson Welles / US, 1948 / 87 min.
Classic film noir from Columbia Pictures, which recently celebrated its centenary. With Rita Hayworth and Orson Welles caught up in shady, murderous business and the famous, dazzling finale in the hall of mirrors. Welles had to sit back and watch as Columbia boss Harry Cohn had the film re-edited.

Rita Hayworth is Elsa Bannister, the archetypal femme fatale who winds men round her little finger and will stop at nothing. The victim, who readily falls for her scheming, is somewhat naïve Irish sailor Mike O’Hara (Orson Welles). He enlists for a long ocean voyage on the yacht belonging to Elsa and her much older husband, millionaire Arthur Bannister. Step by step, he is dragged into a bizarre conspiracy to murder.
