The Mastermind
Kelly Reichardt / US, 2025 / 110 min.
Wryly comedic heist film follows an unhappy dreamer who carries out a crazed art robbery. Indie director Kelly Reichardt intelligently disarms the cinematic cliches of the heist film whilst bringing homage to the New Hollywood classics of the early 1970s.

The aimless J.B. (Josh O’Connor), a former art student and now unemployed carpenter, has come up with a cunning plan: steal a handful of paintings from a small museum outside Boston. It might seem a bad idea, but he has thought of everything – except what to do with his children during the robbery and what he is going to do with the paintings once he has them.
Preliminary film
Before The Mastermind, you'll see the short film A Day in the Life of a Female Figure (7') by Ilke Paddenburg from 2023. When a large painting of a nude female figure is transported from the studio to the exhibition space, she risks falling prey to a clumsy, heavy-handed, and masculine outside world during this journey.
