The Natural History of Destruction
Sergei Loznitsa / DE, NL, LT, 2022 / 111 min.
Sergei Loznitsa (Donbas, Maidan) has made an impressive archive-based documentary about the mass bombing of German cities by the Allies: the abstract beauty of the footage from the air masks the devastation and suffering of the civilian population on the ground.

If you’ve seen a few documentaries on World War II, you’ve probably seen some footage of the bombing of Berlin, Hamburg and Dresden. But these are fragments of a bigger story. Sergei Loznitsa’s latest film goes much further: for almost two hours, he shows us a compilation of recordings from the air of the mass bombing campaigns of the final years of WWII.
