The New Year That Never Came
Bogdan Muresanu / RO, 2024 / 138 min.
Brilliantly directed ensemble drama captures the explosive atmosphere in Romania in late December 1989. An authentic record that shows how little it really took to topple Ceauşescu's communist regime.

On 20 December 1989, Romania was on the verge of revolution. While mass demonstrations take place and students poke fun at the government with art, President Ceauşescu is glorified in New Year’s shows. While he launches Christmas festivities, daily life continues for ordinary Romanians: workers protest, a father argues with his son and plays are continuously being censored. In their unheated homes, families struggle with their own conflicts and the omnipresent secret police.
