A new film by Haifaa Al-Mansour (Wadjda). Maryam is a doctor in Saudi Arabia. When one day she again runs up against the limitations of her gender, she decides to stand as a candidate in the upcoming municipal elections.
It is not a decision that is warmly embraced. Together with her sisters, Maryam tries to persuade her community that she is entitled, even as a woman, to run in the election, and so takes the struggle for women’s rights in Saudi Arabia forward. The film was entered for the Golden Lion competition at the Venice Film Festival.
