The Quiet Girl
Colm Bairéad / IE, 2022 / 94 min.
Colm Bairéad’s Irish-spoken, coming-of-age story about the neglected 9-year-old girl Cáit demonstrates that even a modest film can leave an indelible impression. She flourishes after moving in with foster parents in the countryside, while in the background a secret smoulders.
Nominated for an Oscar in the Best International Feature Film category, a first for an Irish-spoken film. A crystal clear storyline, natural acting by the young lead Catherine Clinch, camerawork that expansively captures the colours and atmosphere of the Irish countryside. It’s with these qualifications that Colm Bairéad’s first feature accumulated some 14 other prizes over the past year.
Pre-screening
Prior to the screening of The Quiet Girl, you will see the short animated 2020 film Dans les nuages blancs (8') by Myrthe Majoor. In a palette of white, grey, soft pink and green tones, a wet natural landscape passes by in which a small boy approaches and tries to ride a wild horse. A metaphor for letting go of old fantasies in the transition from childhood to adulthood.
