The River

Tsai Ming-liang / TW, 1997 / 115 min.

The Taiwanese filmmaker Tsai Ming-liang regards non-communication and loneliness as the key theme of his films, as he has often explained with a broad grin. In The River Tsai’s regular actor Lee Kang-sheng plays a young man in a taciturn family in metropolitan Taipei.

Eye the river b1 affiche lr

Three characters in an apartment: father, mother, son. Their lives run along in parallel, silently; they undergo it all without showing emotion. The mother has a lover who distributes pornographic films; the retired father hangs around in in gay saunas, while son Lee Xiao-kang just drifts along.
