This is Film! 2024 #4: Interactive Presentation of Collections

For the fourth session of This is Film! we invite Irene Haan and Franka Schaap to discuss the Film Catcher and interactive presentations of audiovisual collections in Eye, in conversation with Christian Olesen.

Eye Filmmuseum holds an extensive collection, stored in the vaults of the museum. How can we put this rich history of cinema literally at the fingertips of the museum visitors?

Instead of searching in a database on e.g. film title, director or year, the immersive Film Catcher installation in the permanent exhibition of Eye Filmmuseum allows for visual browsing through hundreds and hundreds of films.

The Film Catcher is unique and experimental, using AI technology to create an interactive and visual search method. This results in surprising discoveries and new connections between films.

The session includes a conversation with Irene Haan and Franka Schaap moderated by Christian Olesen and a film screening. The introduction of this session is in collaboration with the students of the This is Film class at the University of Amsterdam.

Programme

  • Alien Visions (Bram Loogman & Pablo Nuñez Palma, NL 2020, 7’)

Film and video artists Bram Loogman and Pablo Nuñez Palma made Alien Visions as part of the Sensory Moving Image Archive project (SEMIA), initiated by researchers of the University of Amsterdam. The artists use SEMIA feature data as a basis for browsing and selecting newsreel footage. Focussing in particular on feature data relating to shape, they critically explore the data and the moving images retrieved with it in a work that combines found footage filmmaking with a sci-fi thought experiment.

  • To the Moon (Tadhg O’ Sullivan, IR 2020, 73’)

To the Moon follows a full lunar cycle. The result is a collage of stories of love and songs of longing, myths, dreams and nightmares. The film is based on found footage in film archives, moon shots in films by renowned makers and film shots made by moonlight from over five continents.

  • Guest: Irene Haan

Irene Haan is manager of Digital Presentations at Eye Filmmuseum. She develops innovative presentations providing access to Eye's digital film collection, both in the museum (on-site) and online. Irene’s contributions include a museum tour for young visitors, the Eye Film Player streaming service, the film heritage reuse project Jan Bot, and the immersive film installation known as the Film Catcher.

  • Guest: Franka Schaap

Franka Schaap is Operational Director and Project Manager at Studio Louter, a content design studio for museums. Franka leads Studio Louters museum projects from conceptual phase until realisation. Complex multimedia productions are her forté.

  • Guest: Christian Gosvig Olesen

Christian Gosvig Olesen is Assistant Professor Digital Media and Cultural Heritage at the University of Amsterdam. His research focuses on moving image archiving theory and history, digital scholarship and creative reuse. As a researcher, he has been involved in the reuse and infrastructure projects The Sensory Moving Image Archive and the CLARIAH Media Suite.
