This is Film! 2024 #6: Las Musidoras
In the last session of This is Film! Las Musidoras (Émilie Cauquy, Marién Gómez Rodríguez and Elodie Tamayo) discuss the legacy of French filmmaker Musidora, followed by a live performance adaptation of Musidora’s silent film La tierra de los toros (1924) with Veronica Vallecillo.

Musidora (1889-1957) was a well-known French film actress as well as a producer, screenplay writer and director. She directed a total of ten films, of which most are now lost. La tierra de los toros (1924), one of her few surviving films, was a formally free and experimental film, made as part live performance, part cinema. The film, starring Musidora and Antonio Cañero, has been entirely preserved, but any form of documentation or recording of the performance is lost.
Researchers and archivists Émilie Cauquy, Marién Gómez Rodríguez, and Elodie Tamayo will discuss Musidora’s legacy, followed by a live cinema presentation of La Tierra de Los Toros modelled on Musidora’s cinema performance with the dancer Veronica Vallecillo. This session will be moderated by Kate Saccone, PhD-researcher at the University of Amsterdam.
Programme
Live performance adaptation of La tierra de los toros (Musidora, ES 1924, 60’)
A performance by Émilie Cauquy, Marién Gómez Rodríguez, and Elodie Tamayo and dancer Veronica Vallecillo based on Musidora’s silent film La tierra de los toros, that she directed and starred in herself together with Antonio Cañero. The performers/researchers re-imagined Musidora’s original piece based on archival material, such as notebooks, letters, publications, and the original screenplay of the film. Combining this research with inspiration, the performance echoes the ghost-like presence of a whimsical, free-spirited Musidora, filmmaker and lover.
