Three Monkeys
Nuri Bilge Ceylan / TR, FR, IT, 2008 / 108 min.
A politician shifts responsibility for a car accident onto his driver in this winner of the Award for Best Director at the Cannes Film Festival. High praise was given to the intense acting performances and the camerawork.

Rich businessman and up-and-coming politician Servet is overtired, and causes a road accident with deadly consequences. Afraid of losing votes in the upcoming election, he pressures his driver to take on responsibility – and the punishment – for the accident. His stint in prison is not without consequences for the driver’s family.
Gokhan Tiryak’s camerawork captures the protagonists’ emotional states through painstaking, beautiful framing. The screenplay is by the director and his wife Ebru, who appeared as an actress in Iklimler (2006).

Eye Filmmuseum presents the first Dutch exhibition devoted to the work of acclaimed Turkish filmmaker and photographer Nuri Bilge Ceylan. For this occasion, the museum is bringing together his prize-winning films and lesser-known landscape photographs for the very first time. That combination reveals not only Ceylan’s masterly photographic eye and sense of composition, but also the deeply compassionate way he explores universal themes from a Turkish perspective.
