To Sir, with Love

James Clavell / GB, 1966 / 105 min.

A rookie teacher (superbly played by Sidney Poitier) is thrown to the lions in a London class full of noisy, unruly pupils. This much-loved classic gave insights into the problems and concerns of teenagers in the 1960s.

Sidney Poitier in one of his best roles as Mark Thackeray, an unemployed engineer who starts teaching pupils who have been expelled from every other school in a working-class district in London. The final year class, egged on by ringleaders Denham, Pamela and Barbara, try to break Thackeray and force him to leave, like they did his predecessor. But Thackeray – as a Black man well used to animosity – takes a very different approach: he decides to treat the students as young adults who will soon have to fend for themselves.
