Tora-san, Wish You Were Here
Yoji Yamada / JP, 2019 / 116 min.
Charming homage to Tora-san, Japan’s most popular film character and also the title of Shochiku’s long-running film series. Closing film of the film programme focussing on this renowned production house.

In 1969, Yamada Yōji released the first of his films featuring his hot-headed antihero Kuruma Torajirō, or Tora-san for short: a kind-hearted type from Tokyo’s Katsushika district, which as the series progresses becomes the showcase for middle-class Japan – an old-fashioned world of decency and straightforwardness in which liberals and conservatives struck an almost impossible balance.
