Venice VR Expanded

This year, the Venice Film Festival’s Virtual Reality programme can be uniquely enjoyed at the twelve international cultural institutions to have joined its satellite venues network program. Eye is one of the venues to offer the festival’s special selection, from 2 through 12 September. With 40 productions from 24 countries, Venice VR Expanded 2020 provides a welcome alternative to regular festivals in these culturally straitened times of Corona.

Like many other festivals, the Venice Film Festival, the world”s oldest film festival, had to find alternative ways to present its festival due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

For the 77th edition of the festival, it will not only be possible to enjoy Venice VR Expanded online but also through a satellite venues network comprising twelve cultural institutions from all over the world. In addition to Amsterdam, the 40 VR productions to have been selected by the festival can be viewed in eleven other cities, including Barcelona, Paris, Taipei, Berlin and Beijing.

comprehensive programme

A competition programme of 31 titles, nine titles outside the competition and four Venice VR Academy projects immerses visitors in a wide range of virtual experiences.

Prizes are awarded in three categories: Best VR Immersive Work, Best VR Immersive User Experience and Best VR Immersive Story. This year”s jury consists of VR filmmaker Céline Tricart (The Key), filmmaker Asif Kapadia (Amy) and video game designer Hideo Kojima (Metal Gear Solid).

well-known names

Now that more and more filmmakers are exploring the possibilities of VR, it is no surprise to find well-known names from the world of cinema in the competition, such as the Danish Christoffer Boe (Offscreen) and the American Jon Favreau (The Lion King).
