Verlorene1

Die Verlorenen is based on footage from Berlin in the 1930s. The rise of Nazi Germany in these troubled years put an end to the production of Die Verlorenen. Reynolds discovered, remade and completed the film between 2011 and 2013. Nearly all scenes were shot in public art spaces like the Haus der Kulturen der Welt and the Sprengel Museum in Berlin.

The young English writer Christopher joins a cabaret in Berlin consisting of an eccentric old man, young artists, dancers, performers and musicians. Down in the basement, Christopher witnesses experiments that negotiate the terrain between life and death and are enigmatic rather than scientific.

The title refers to the work Christopher Isherwood began to write after having lived in Berlin between 1929 and 1933. “The lost” not only alludes to “the erring and the damned” as a reminder of the tragic political events taking place in Germany, but also refers to individuals cast out by polite society.

With musical accompaniment by Gerard Bouwhuis (piano), Heleen Hulst (violin and foley), Jellantsje de Vries (viola and foley).

In collaboration with Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ.
