1944, and the war - though far away - casts its shadow on Vermiglio, a mountain village high up in the Italian Alps. The arrival of Pietro, a deserter from Sicily, upsets dynamics in the otherwise so quiet village and particularly in the teacher’s family. Lucia, the family’s eldest, feels very attracted to the stranger. The deep snow melts, love blooms and peace spreads across Italy. However, as the world breathes a sigh of relief, the family has its own misery to endure.
