VPRO Cinema presents: Woody Allen in EYE

To celebrate the film retrospective which EYE is currently devoting to Woody Allen, VPRO Cinema presents a special Woody Allen afternoon on 18 July featuring two Woody Allen film classics: the science fiction spoof Sleeper and Hannah and her Sisters, which won three Oscars. Both films are introduced by Ronald Rovers.
14.00 Sleeper (VS 1973) 89'A science fiction satire and screwball comedy about the future – which includes Dixieland music. Woody plays the nerdy Miles Monroe, a jazz clarinet player and the owner of a health food shop who wakes up in a dystopic future in the year 2173. The musician had been cryogenically frozen after what he believed would be a minor ulcer surgery. Once defrosted and awake, he is mistaken for a subversive alien fugitive by the totalitarian government and a saviour by the rebels.
15:45 Break
16.15 Hannah and Her Sisters (VS 1986) 105'This typical Woody Allen portrait of New York intellectuals struggling with their urban neuroses is at the same time a complex tale of an emotionally brittle family. The neurotic Mickey (Allen) has divorced Hannah (Mia Farrow) but still sees his ex-wife and her sisters regularly. Hannah, Lee and Holly are three sisters from a well-to-do family in Manhattan who like sharing their emotional ups and downs with each other. Following her divorce from the failing TV producer Mickey, the successful actress Hannah would appear to be the only stable sibling, but when her ex starts dating her younger sister Holly and her brand-new husband (Michael Caine) begins an affair with her sister Lee, the family ties are becoming a bit frayed.
