VR Academy: The Onion Effect
NL, 2025
The third year students of the VR Academy all play with different media and question their context to generate a response. Just like the peeling of an onion, they create work to provoke an emotional reaction, revealing more with every layer.

The Onion Effect reveals that beneath every surface emotion, there is something more—something complex, nuanced, and worthy of exploration. The act of peeling back these layers offers the opportunity to face emotions head-on and confront the truths that lie hidden beneath.
Immersive Media is about discovering new forms of storytelling using experimental technology. Its students play with both analog and digital media to create immerse experiences. This presentation showcases the current progression of the third year students’ personal research.
One of the projects uses Virtual Reality to play with the sense of discomfort. Max Slot experiments with different forms of presence, using the subway as an entry point, to trigger a certain sense of anxiety.
Marieke Mars focusses her research on combining virtual reality with sensorial input. She questions how to progress a story using your very own heart rate using her interest in horror. This results in a meta experience that follows the tragic life of the creator of a horror game.
Lastly Jelle Stokvis presents his research to micro-and macro systems through an immersive visual experience. He experiments using different digital and procedural media to engage people into a sense of connection.
You can see the virtual reality in the IJ Lounge on 7 February (17:00 - 21:30) and 8 February (13:30 - 21:30) upon presentation of a cinema ticket to any ResearchLabs presentation.
