Waking Life
Richard Linklater / US, 2001 / 99 min.
Real or fake? In 2001, Richard Linklater addressed these pressing questions in the philosophically tinged Waking Life, an intriguing mix of live-action and (rotoscope) animation starring Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy. What if your life turns out to be someone else's dream?

A nameless young student (Wiley Wiggins) moves through the world, his mind full of questions, including the razor-thin separation between dream and reality. When do you know if a dream has ended?
Weaving between forty encounters with people from all over, the student ponders the idea, covering all-important questions such as 'What is identity?', 'Does free will exist?' and 'Where does God live?'. Answers are scarce, as is usual in an existentialist reflection.
Screening on 35mm from the Eye collection.
