When Chueca Dies
Ramón Gieling / NL, 2025 / 97 min.
Portrait of the Chueca neighbourhood in Madrid also known as ‘Europe’s most important pink neighbourhood’ as shot by Spanish-Dutch director Ramón Gieling. Members of the LGBTQIA+ community and immigrants sometimes adopt the identities of their enemies.

Chueca is the internationally famous neighbourhood in the heart of Madrid that has offered refuge to the LGBTQIA+ community since the 1990s. The changing political climate and hate-mongering (extreme) right-wing politicians’ rhetoric have made the neighbourhood a target in recent years.
The film portrays the area’s exceptional inhabitants: from trans people and drag queens to young, married lesbians and refugees. The film’s framework are the ‘live’ broadcasts by Radio Chueca Libertaria from the legendary Berkana Boekhandel [bookshop] which discuss the neighbourhood’s decline and the fragile state of LGBTQIA+ rights globally.
