Women Talking
Sarah Polley / US, 2023 / 104 min.
Sarah Polley filmed this Canadian novel based on a true story about rapes that occurred in a Mennonite community. The women from this ultraconservative religious group played by, among others, Jessie Buckley, Rooney Mara and Claire Foy, refuse to be silenced any longer.
Eight Mennonite women meet in a hay barn. After it was revealed the ‘supernatural’ rape the drugged women experienced was perpetrated by men from their own community, they face heart-rending choices. Do nothing, fight back or turn their back on the community. They needn’t expect help from their own fathers and husbands. In fact, the men have given the women two days to forgive the rapists.
