Xixiangji
Hou Yao, Minwi Li / CN, 1927 / 60 min.
This silent Chinese romantic adventure film is an early example of a martial arts film. Composition students from the HKU Music and Technology department created the score that will be performed live by the Keuris Ensemble led by Henry Kelder.
This romantic film, based on a classic play, was produced by the Minxin Company (China Sun Motion Picture Company), one of the over 100 production companies operating in Shanghai at the height of the 1920s. By 1930 a mere nine would remain, primarily as a result of competition from Hollywood.
