Edward Yang subtly portrays a family’s everyday struggles, remorse about the past and uncertainty about the future, by overlapping three generations’ perspectives. A businessman in New Jersey is confronted by his past when he meets his former lover. His impulsive wife wants to leave him to lead a more meaningful life. Their teenage daughter is overwhelmed by her emotions while her cute younger brother is obsessed with philosophical matters. When their grandmother ends up in a coma, the family gathers arounds her.
