A Bigger Splash

Luca Guadagnino / IT, FR, 2015 / 125 min.

Sexy, sunny, simmering remake of Jacques Deray's French classic La piscine. Rock star (Tilda Swinton) and her boyfriend are on holiday when they are disturbed by an unexpected guest. This slightly threatening Mediterranean noir-cocktail will be introduced by Tilda Swinton on 31-1.

With a nod to David Bowie – whom she has often been compared to – Tilda Swinton plays rock legend Marianne Lane, who is recovering from vocal chord surgery on Pantelleria, insulated in a cocoon of luxury with her lover Paul.

Luca Guadagnino only slightly modified the original La piscine (1969) by moving the action from the nowadays quotidian Côte d'Azur to the untrammelled beauty of the volcanic Italian island of Pantelleria.

Pre-film

Prior to A Bigger Splash, you will see Depuis le jour (6’), Derek Jarman’s episode in the British anthology film Aria (1987, 90’), produced by Don Boyd, which consists of ten short opera films by ten different filmmakers. Tilda Swinton hand-picked a short film, either from her rich oeuvre or from Eye’s collection, to precede all feature films.

Why in Eye

When Luca asked me to make this film, my mother had just died and I was not inclined to say or do much. But I did want to take my children to be in Pantellaria with my friends for the summer.. I tentatively proposed that we make the garrulous actress in the original script a rock star who needed to be silent and he did not turn a hair. That’s friendship.
