Akira Kurosawa's Dreams
Akira Kurosawa / US, JP, 1990 / 119 min.
This late, personal work by Akira Kurosawa consists of eight mythical vignettes inspired by the director’s own night time visions. Child-like wonder is replaced by apocalyptic scenes in this lush visual journey through the master’s imagination.

When Akira Kurosawa released his much lauded epic Ran in 1985, many viewed it as the 75-year-old director’s swansong. It came as a complete surprise when, in 1990, he returned with Dreams, a subdued film, atypical to his oeuvre. It is one of the calmest and simultaneously most beautiful, odd and terrifying works of Kurosawa's career.
4K restoration, supervised by cinematographer Shoji Ueda.
Dreams is also one of the films chosen by American artist and filmmaker Garrett Bradley, to whom Eye is dedicating an exhibition this summer. See here for more information.
