Michael Mann / US, 2001 / 157 min.
Starting with The Jericho Mile (1979), all films of Michael Mann have been about obsessive men, whether sportsmen, police detectives or gangsters. With Ali, his biopic about boxing legend Muhammad Ali, Mann added perhaps the most colourful hero to his roll call of iron-willed characters.
The Champ was a controversial figure, a role any actor worth his salt would love to get his teeth into. Will Smith, former rapper and star of the 1990s sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, may not have been the obvious choice, but it turned out a great success.
