Toer van Schayk (Amsterdam, 1936) has had a long and distinguished career as a visual artist, dancer, set designer and choreographer. His compelling and expressive performances made him one of the Dutch National Ballet”s most beloved solo dancers. After his career as a dancer he led the company to international fame, together with fellow choreographers Rudi van Dantzig and Hans van Manen.

Van Schayk has been called “the last Renaissance man” owing to his versatility, skill and attention to detail. Among his numerous masterpieces are pieces like The Nutcracker and The Mouse King, for which he designed both the captivating sets and the costumes and also produced most of the choreography. In addition to the interview, the programme includes the performance of a new 15-minute choreography by van Schayk, the “Live-pas- de-deux” (Episodes in Fragmenten), and the screening of his two dance films for TV (Ik ben de enige (I am the Only One), 2014, 15”; Viool in de nacht (Violin in the Night), 1989, 7”). Van Schayk will also be signing copies of the recently published monograph Toer van Schayk. Danser, choreograaf en kunstenaar.

A collaboration between EYE, the Dutch National Opera & Ballet and Stichting Toer van Schayk.
