Andrej Roebljov
Andrei Tarkovski / SUHH, 1966 / 189 min.
Classics should regularly be screened in cinemas. This is definitely true of Andrei Tarkovsky’s masterpiece on the life of the 15th-century Russian iconographer Andrei Rublev – a grand historical drama and philosophical meditation about painting combined.

Tarkovsky and fellow scriptwriter Andrei Kontsjalovski provide a contemplative meditation on the artist’s task in a terrorised society. In his desire to shape a pure form of art, master painter Andrei Rublev does not wish to compromised in any way. He holds his tongue. Later on, he meets a jester, whose language makes him impervious to the rulers’ power and is punished for this.
