Bad Lieutenant
Abel Ferrara / US, 1992 / 96 min.
In Ferrara’s notorious masterpiece, Harvey Keitel relishes his memorable role as the tragically corrupt, drug and sex addicted cop burdened with Catholic guilt. Terrifying, entirely contrarian cop movie shot in a grim New York.

Accompanying the VR experience Missing Pictures, in which Abel Ferrara discusses the political thriller Birds of Prey, which was never made, Eye will screen his notorious Bad Lieutenant. Harvey Keitel plays the titular perverted, corrupt New York cop, addicted to crack, heroin and alcohol as well as buried in debt. The brutal rape of a nun promises resolution: there’s a 50,000 dollar reward for finding the perpetrator.
On December 18, filmmaker Martin Koolhoven, a big fan of Bad Lieutenant, will introduce the film.

For every film completed, dozens of potential films fall by the wayside and never make it onto the big screen. In the VR experience Missing Pictures, Abel Ferrara, Tsai Ming-liang, Catherine Hardwicke, Naomi Kawase, and Lee Myung-Se give us a guided tour of a story they were not able to tell.

Why in Eye
It doesn't get any more raw than Bad Lieutenant. As a corrupt cop, Harvey Keitel slides further and further towards the drain. What few people know is that the film was modified shortly after its original release due to copyright infringement. So if you've seen the film on DVD, you actually haven't seen the film yet! Eye is showing the original on 18 December!
