Barry Lyndon
Stanley Kubrick / GB, US, 1975 / 184 min.
Kubrick transforms William Thackeray’s novel about the rise and fall of 18th-century adventurer Barry Lyndon into a fresco made up of monumental compositions. Screens in a new 4K restored version that premièred at the Cannes Film Festival 2025.

Perfectionist Kubrick manages to present the experience of the pre-electric 18th-century with rare authenticity: the director shot the film exclusively in natural light and by candlelight. Ryan O'Neal and Marisa Berenson play the leads in Kubrick’s opulent adaptation of Thackeray's classic 18th-century novel about the rise and fall of sensitive, charming charlatan Redmond Barry.
Barry Lyndon is presented in the film’s photographed aspect ratio of 1.66:1, as specified in a December 8, 1975 letter from director to projectionists. This new 4K restoration by Criterion Collection was sourced from a 4K scan of the 35mm original camera negative.
Barry Lyndon is screened with a 15-minute intermission, starting at around 107 minutes into the film.
