Beyond Oblivion
Hugo del Carril / AR, 1955 / 97 min.
A man attempts to bring his deceased lover back to life using another woman. This seldom-screened, rediscovered masterpiece is an Argentinian gothic psychodrama that is often compared to Vertigo. 4K restoration.

Two years before Vertigo this remarkable gothic drama dealt with almost the same subject matter as Hitchcock’s much more famous work: erotic obsession with a doppelganger. A rich man (played by director Hugo del Carril) is broken by the death of his wife (Laura Hidalgo) and becomes a recluse in Paris. There he encounters a prostitute who is her exact double (also played by Hidalgo). He lures the latter to his sizeable estate under the watchful eye of a jilted, murderous ex-partner and starts manipulating her. He subsequently modifies her to become a perfect copy of his erstwhile wife.
