Boys Don't Cry
Kimberly Peirce / US, 1999 / 118 min.
Brandon, a young trans man, arrives in a small town in the American midwest looking for friendship and love. Brandon finds love with Lana (Chloë Sevigny), but the locals’ stereotypes bring their idyll to a gruesome end. Oscar for Hilary Swank.

Boys Don't Cry, one of the big independent films from the 1990’s was based on the real-life murder of Brandon Teena in small town America in 1993, transforming the newspaper report into an empathetic, confrontational drama that was one of the few at the time to centre on a transgender person’s perspective.
