Breaking the Waves
Lars von Trier / DK, NL, DE, SE, NO, 1996 / 150 min.
Top-notch drama by Lars von Trier about the tragic love between the deeply religious Bess and Jan, who works on an oil platform. Von Trier tells his overwhelming story in sensuous, stunning images. The (hand-held) camera work is by Robby Müller. 30th anniversary.

As soon as Jan is out at sea, pious Bess becomes tormented by desire. Such is her agony, she beseeches God to bring her man back to her. And Jan does indeed return: paralysed from the neck down. Bess believes it’s all her fault.
