Captives

Kristóf Deák / HU, 2019 / 85 min.

Budapest, 1951. The communist secret police appears at a family’s door, but instead of deporting them, the agents move in with them. They lock the inhabitants in their own homes as they do with everyone who knocks on the door. The situation becomes increasingly absurd as the growing number of captives in the apartment become entangled in lies and paranoia.

In 1950s Hungary, under the communist regime of Mátyás Rákosi, many families were banished due to their heritage. Even a high-ranking official is not allowed out of his apartment in the Kammerspiel Captives. He is locked into his house together with the people who rang the doorbell. Days pass with no explanation.
