Caravaggio
Derek Jarman / GB, 1986 / 93 min.
Tilda Swinton made her imposing feature film debut in the sumptuous and extraordinarily daring biopic of Baroque artist Caravaggio. Winner of the Grand Jury prize at the Berlin Film Festival.

Jarman’s feverish, chiaroscuro portrait of Renaissance artist Caravaggio who engaged with male lovers, prostitutes and the
criminal underclass of early 17th-century Rome. The lush, sumptuous film
brings together Jarman’s principal themes: downtrodden artists,
homosexual love and the hypocrisy of church authorities.
Introduction 30 September
Iztokk, art historian, photographer, filmmaker and lecturer (Moving Image, Royal Academy of Art, The Hague, will introduce Jarman's Caravaggio. He will view the film through a subjective queer lens and discuss personas that transcend gender and sexual norms.
In his own work, Iztokk brings alter egos of himself and other queer people to life. He translates personal experiences into performative settings, often using landscapes as metaphors. Izztok recently presented his work at the Centre for Contemporary Art Celje, Eye Filmmuseum, and at film festivals including Kasseler Dokfest, the Post Pxrn Film Festival in Warsaw and the LGBT Film Festival Ljubljana.
Caravaggio will be released nationally by Eye on 25 September to accompany the exhibition Tilda Swinton – Ongoing.
