Ciske de Rat
Guido Pieters / NL, 1984 / 110 min.
Box-office hit about an Amsterdam street urchin with a heart of gold who’s always in trouble with the locals. A teacher tries to put him on the right path, but when in a rage Ciske stabs his malevolent mother, he is sent to the reformatory.

Ciske is seen as an unruly boy who’s only interested in getting up to mischief. His father is a sailor who Ciske hardly ever sees, and his mother wants nothing to do with him. But Ciske’s heart is in the right place, and he tries to make something of himself in 1930s Amsterdam. Mister Bruis manages to win Ciske’s trust, and for a while it looks like his life might finally be getting on track. Until Ciske’s mother tears up his favourite book and, in a fit of rage, Ciske stabs her.
